Erykah Badu has always been known to incite a reaction. Her music is soulful, truthful and has an eclectic mix of R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz and Funk. After a two year hiatus, she has recently released her newest album, New Amerykah Part II. In true Badu form, the video of her single made a bold and controversial statement.
In the video, “Window Seat”, Badu strips naked as she walks through busy streets. Erykah was fined for indecency.
The neo-soul artist recently held a concert in Miami at the American Airlines Arena. I was privileged to go to the concert and had the honor of going back stage after the concert for a meet and greet. Ms. Badu spoke about the controversy surrounding her video and had this to say:
It was an experiment in group thinking…If everyone has an opinion about something and it differs your own, will you stand up for what you believe in, or will you follow the crowd and change your mind?...You have a right to your opinion, someone else has a right to react to your opinion, but your rights stop when you try to hinder someone from expressing their views.
This is day 10 of the experiment and today I actually questioned whether or not I was wrong for what I did. We’ll see what day 11 brings…If nothing else, I know I made someone feel liberated and I made them think.
